If the sofa happened to be a mile long, enough space wouldn’t exist to prevent Michelle’s overwhelming need to jump the orthopedic surgeon’s fabulous bones.

But at the moment she was curled up on one end of the couch with her legs beneath her; Nick was on the other end with his long legs propped on the coffee table before them. At least she could try to control herself, unlike her lack of control earlier that evening.

Maybe he was right. Maybe things were moving too fast. But every time he kissed her, she became helpless putty in his hands. She had no will to fight him, and if he didn’t have that steely resolve, he could have had his way with her in the kitchen, or anywhere for that matter. Even on the sofa where they now sat.

Michelle brushed her damp hair out of her face and picked up her glass of wine. Perhaps if she guzzled it she might forget her devilish thoughts. Or act on them.

She gave her attention to the scene outside to avoid looking at him. “I didn’t think anything would top seeing the sun setting, but that was before all the stars came out.”

“Yeah. Kelsey and I like to sit here and try to count them. She usually falls asleep before we get to twenty.”

The image of Nick counting stars with his daughter blanketed Michelle’s heart with warmth and true admiration. Brooke had been right. He was a good dad. A good man. On first impression, Michelle would never have believed that about him. She’d viewed him as a primo playboy, interested only in the next conquest, another notch on his scalpel, not at all unlike another man she’d known. A man who had colored her judgment for years.

Now she was beginning to realize that Nick’s charm was something that came naturally to him. An aspect of his personality that he couldn’t control. It didn’t make him evil or totally unredeemable in Michelle’s eyes. It did make her more cautious.

Yet the warm, fuzzy feelings surfacing for Nick overrode her concerns and drew Michelle close to his side, probably at the risk of his rejection. Still, she craved the contact, his warmth, something she hadn’t had in a very long time.

She tried to curl up beside him but he leaned forward and picked up a strawberry. Surprisingly he sat back and draped his free arm over the back of the sofa, allowing her the contact she so desperately needed from him.

“Here. Have a berry.” He touched the fruit to her lips.

She took it and chewed but found it difficult to swallow. She finally did, with effort. “It’s good.”

“Then you do like fruit.”

“Yes. Why?”

“I don’t know. Just something Jared told me. He said that if you’re anything like Brooke, I should bring along a lot of fruit.”

Michelle frowned. “I have no idea what he’s talking about.”

“Neither do I, but I have a feeling it’s pretty personal.”

Michelle couldn’t imagine Brooke doing something suggestive with fruit. But then, she hadn’t imagined Brooke falling in love again when she’d seemed so adamant not to.
